Method

Preparation of Ingredients

  1. 1

    Slice the Onion

Peel the large onion and slice it into 1/4 inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well mixed. In another bowl, whisk the milk and egg together until combined. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings.

Frying the Onion Rings

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep pot or a deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is hot enough.

  2. 4

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off before frying.

  3. 5

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place a few coated onion rings into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

  4. 6

    Repeat and Serve

Continue the process until all onion rings are fried. Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauce.
