Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Grate Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes using a vegetable peeler. Rinse them under cold water to remove excess starch. Grate the potatoes using a box grater or a food processor with a grating attachment.

  2. 2

    Remove Excess Moisture

Place the grated potatoes in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth. Squeeze out as much moisture as possible to ensure the hash browns are crispy when cooked.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil and Butter

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil and butter over medium-high heat until the butter is melted and bubbling.

  2. 4

    Add Potatoes

Evenly spread the grated and dried potatoes in the skillet. Press down gently with a spatula to form an even layer.

  3. 5

    Season the Potatoes

Sprinkle salt, black pepper, and garlic powder over the top of the potatoes.

  4. 6

    Cook Until Golden Brown

Cook for 5-7 minutes without stirring, until the bottom is golden brown. Carefully flip the hash brown over using a large spatula.

  5. 7

    Cook Second Side

Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes until the second side is also golden brown and crispy.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve Hot

Once both sides are crispy and cooked through, transfer the hash brown to a plate. Cut into wedges or serve whole. Enjoy hot with your favorite breakfast items or toppings.
