Sushi Rice

Sashimi Filling

Nori and Garnishes

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a rice cooker, combine the rinsed rice and water. Cook according to the rice cooker's instructions.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow it to cool to room temperature.

Prepare Sashimi Filling

  1. 4

    Slice the Ahi Tuna

Using a sharp knife, slice the Ahi tuna into thin strips, about 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 5

    Prepare Avocado and Cucumber

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and slice into thin strips. Peel the cucumber, cut it in half lengthwise, and slice into thin strips.

Assemble the Maki

  1. 6

    Lay Out Nori

Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down.

  2. 7

    Spread Sushi Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking and take a handful of sushi rice. Spread the rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

  3. 8

    Add Fillings

Place the slices of Ahi tuna, avocado, and cucumber horizontally across the middle of the rice-covered nori.

  4. 9

    Roll the Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the nori away from you, pressing gently but firmly to keep the roll tight. Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.

  5. 10

    Slice the Maki

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 8 equal pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts for clean edges.

Serve the Maki

    Presentation
