Directions

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the long-grain white rice in a fine mesh strainer or bowl. Rinse the rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Measure Water

In a medium saucepan, measure out 2 cups of water. This will be the cooking liquid for the rice.

  3. 3

    Add Salt

Add 0.5 tsp of salt to the measured water in the saucepan. This enhances the flavor of the rice.

  4. 4

    Boil Water

Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t boil over.

  5. 5

    Add Rice

Once the water is boiling, add the rinsed rice to the saucepan. Stir briefly to separate any clumps.

  6. 6

    Cover and Simmer

Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let the rice simmer for about 18-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time as it lets steam escape.

  7. 7

    Check for Doneness

After 18 minutes, check to see if the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender. If needed, cover and cook for an additional 2-5 minutes.

  8. 8

    Fluff and Serve

Once the rice is done, remove the saucepan from heat. Let it sit covered for 5 minutes, then fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
