Baguette Ingredients

Method

Baguette Directions

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, mix warm water (about 110°F) with sugar and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Prepare Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Mix until a rough dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape Baguettes

Punch down the dough and divide it into 2 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a long baguette (about 14 inches) and place them on a floured baking sheet.

  6. 6

    Second Rise

Cover the shaped baguettes with a cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.

  7. 7

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking stone or an inverted baking sheet inside to heat.

  8. 8

    Score and Bake

Using a sharp knife, make several diagonal slashes on top of each baguette. Transfer the baguettes to the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

  9. 9

    Cool

Remove the baguettes from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing.
