Calamari

Marinara Sauce

Method

Preparing the Marinara Sauce

  1. 1

    Cook the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. 2

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 3

    Finish the Sauce

Stir in the chopped basil and set the marinara sauce aside to cool.

Making the Lemon Aioli

  1. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, minced garlic, lemon juice, lemon zest, and salt until well combined.

  2. 5

    Refrigerate

Cover the aioli and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld.

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 6

    Set Up the Breading Station

In one bowl, place the flour. In another bowl, combine cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. In a third bowl, beat the egg.

  2. 7

    Coat the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring first in the flour, then in the egg, and finally in the cornstarch mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

  3. 8

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  4. 9

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serving

  1. 10

    Plate the Calamari

Arrange the crispy calamari on a serving plate.

  2. 11

    Serve with Dips

Serve the fried calamari with marinara sauce and lemon aioli on the side.
