Method

Prepare the Ingredients

  1. 1

    Chop the Onion

Peel and slice the medium onion into thin rings.

  2. 2

    Prepare Bacon Habanero Jam

If using homemade bacon habanero jam, ensure it is ready. If store-bought, open the jar and set aside.

Cook the Burger Patty

  1. 3

    Season the Beef

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix until just combined.

  2. 4

    Form the Patty

Shape the seasoned beef into a large, flat burger patty, about 1 inch thick.

  3. 5

    Cook the Patty

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place the burger patty in the skillet and press down firmly with a spatula. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side.

  4. 6

    Add Cheese

Flip the patty and immediately place a slice of Swiss cheese and a slice of American cheese on top. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the patty is cooked to your liking.

Sauté the Onions

  1. 7

    Cook the Onions

In the same skillet, add a little butter if needed, and sauté the sliced onions over medium heat until they are caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.

Toast the Bread

  1. 8

    Butter the Rye Bread

Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.

  2. 9

    Grill the Bread

Place the buttered bread slices in the skillet and toast until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Assemble the Patti Melt

  1. 10

    Layer the Ingredients

On one slice of toasted rye, layer the cooked burger patty with melted cheese, sautéed onions, and a generous spoonful of bacon habanero jam.

  2. 11

    Complete the Sandwich

Top with another slice of toasted rye bread, buttered side up. Repeat for the second sandwich.

Serve

  1. 12

    Slice and Serve

Cut the patti melt in half and serve warm with your choice of side.
