Prepare the Calamari

Clean the Calamari
Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

Make the Batter
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.

Coat the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring into the egg mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture until fully coated. Set aside on a plate.

Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Drain and Serve
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with additional salt if desired.

Slice the banana peppers in half lengthwise and remove the seeds.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add the chopped basil just before serving.
