Fried Calamari

Banana Peppers

Method

Prepare the Calamari

  1. 1

    Clean the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.

  3. 3

    Coat the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring into the egg mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture until fully coated. Set aside on a plate.

Fry the Calamari

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  3. 6

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with additional salt if desired.

Prepare the Banana Peppers

  1. 7

    Prep the Peppers

Slice the banana peppers in half lengthwise and remove the seeds.

  2. 8

    Sauté the Peppers

In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the banana pepper halves and sprinkle with salt. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until they are tender.

Make the Marinara Sauce

  1. 9

    Sauté the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 10

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add the chopped basil just before serving.
