For the Onion Rings

Method

Preparation and Cooking

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Gradually whisk in the cold sparkling water until the batter is smooth and well combined.

  3. 3

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, coat the battered onion ring with panko bread crumbs, pressing lightly to adhere.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep pot or heavy skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully add the coated onion rings to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve the onion rings hot with your choice of dipping sauce.
