Cocktail Base

Method

Cocktail Preparation

  1. 1

    Build and stir

In a mixing glass, add the tart cherry juice, simple syrup, and both bitters. Add the cinnamon stick and lightly roll/muddle it once to release cinnamon oils — avoid pulverizing. Pour in the 2 oz cherry whiskey. Add ice to the mixing glass and stir briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 medium turns) until well-chilled and properly diluted (chilled to the rim of the glass and slightly viscous).

  2. 2

Using a Hawthorne strainer (or julep strainer) strain the chilled cocktail into a rocks glass containing a single large clear ice cube.

Aromatics & Finish

  1. 3

Express the orange peel over the drink: hold the peel (outer zest facing down) about 3–4 inches above the glass and give it a firm twist to release the oils over the surface. Optionally, run the peel’s outer side around the glass rim, then discard or drop into the drink for added aroma.

  2. 4

Place the dehydrated blood orange wheel on top of the large ice cube as the primary garnish. Rest the used cinnamon stick alongside the wheel (or tuck it against the ice) for visual appeal and additional aroma. Give the finished cocktail one gentle stir to integrate aromas.
