Method
Fried Okra Directions
- 1
Prepare the Okra
Wash the okra pods and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rounds.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg and mix it with the buttermilk.
- 3
Coat the Okra
Dip the okra slices into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge them in the flour and cornmeal mixture until fully coated.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches, frying until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 6
Serve
Serve the fried okra hot with homemade creole mustard aioli.
