Potato Preparation

Optional Toppings

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Wash and Cut the Potatoes

Thoroughly wash and scrub each Russet potato under running water to remove any dirt. Slice each potato into 1/4 inch thick waffle shapes using a waffle cutter or a knife.

  2. 2

    Soak the Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes in a large bowl of cold water and let them soak for at least 30 minutes. This helps to remove excess starch and makes the fries crispier.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large heavy pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Dry the Potatoes

After soaking, drain the potatoes and pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

  3. 5

    Fry the Potatoes

Carefully add a handful of the dried waffle-cut potatoes to the hot oil. Fry them in batches for about 5-7 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place on paper towels to drain.

  4. 6

    Season the Fries

While the fries are still hot, sprinkle them with salt, paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper to taste. Toss gently to ensure even coating.

Serving Suggestions

  1. 7

    Add Toppings

Serve the waffle fries hot, topped with grated cheddar cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and garnished with chopped green onions and jalapeños, if desired.
