Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a rolling boil.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni to the boiling water, stirring occasionally. Cook for about 8-10 minutes or until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Preparing Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt Butter

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter.

  2. 4

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, whisk in 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. Cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a roux, being careful not to let it brown.

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 6

    Add Cheese and Seasoning

Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 tsp of salt, 0.5 tsp of black pepper, 0.5 tsp of garlic powder, and 0.5 tsp of mustard powder until smooth and creamy.

Combining and Serving

  1. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is thoroughly coated.

  2. 8

    Prepare Topping (optional)

If using, mix 0.5 cups of bread crumbs with 0.5 cups of grated Parmesan cheese.

  3. 9

    Bake (optional)

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the topping over it, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

  4. 10

    Serve

Serve hot and enjoy your homemade mac & cheese!
