Brisket

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Spice Rub

In a small bowl, mix together salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. This will be your spice rub.

  2. 2

    Season the Brisket

Rub the spice mixture generously over the beef brisket, ensuring it is evenly coated on all sides.

  3. 3

    Sear the Brisket

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, sear the brisket on all sides until browned, about 4-5 minutes per side.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Prepare the Cooking Liquid

In a slow cooker or a large baking dish, combine beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh thyme.

  2. 5

    Cook the Brisket

Place the seared brisket into the slow cooker or baking dish with the prepared cooking liquid. If using a slow cooker, cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours. If using the oven, cover the dish with foil and bake at 300°F (150°C) for 4-5 hours.

  3. 6

    Check Doneness

The brisket is done when it is fork-tender. Check for tenderness after the cooking time is up.

Serving

  1. 7

    Rest and Slice

Once cooked, remove the brisket from the slow cooker or oven and let it rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing. This helps retain the juices.

  2. 8

    Serve

Slice against the grain and serve with your choice of sides, such as mashed potatoes or coleslaw.
