Coffee

Method

Prepare Beans and Equipment

  1. 1

    Measure and grind

Weigh or scoop about 0.33 cup (roughly 20 grams) of decaffeinated whole-bean coffee. Grind to a medium grind for drip or pour-over (similar to granulated sugar). If using pre-ground decaf, skip grinding and use the same volume.

  2. 2

If desired, warm your cup by filling it with 1/4 cup hot water, let sit 30–60 seconds, then pour the warming water out. This helps the coffee stay hot longer.

Brewing (Pour-over / Drip)

  1. 3

    Boil water

Heat filtered water to 200°F (just off boil). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.

  2. 4

Bloom (pour-over) or pre-wet filter (drip)

If using a pour-over: place coffee grounds in a paper filter in the dripper. Pour about 2 tablespoons (30–40 ml) of the hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them and allow them to bloom for 30–45 seconds. If using an automatic drip: place grounds in the filter and proceed to brew normally.

  3. 5

    Finish pouring / start brew

For pour-over: after the bloom, slowly pour the remaining hot water in a circular motion over the grounds until you reach 1 cup total brewed coffee. Aim for a total brew time of 2.5–3.5 minutes. For a drip machine: start the brew and let the machine complete the cycle to produce about 1 cup of coffee.

  4. 6

    Serve

Remove the dripper or carafe from the mug, discard the used filter and grounds. Pour the brewed decaf coffee into your warmed cup if you pre-warmed it.

Optional Finishing

  1. 7

If you want sweetness without calories, stir in up to 1 tsp calorie-free sweetener to taste. If you prefer a little creaminess, stir in 1 tablespoon unsweetened almond milk (note: this adds a small amount of calories). Adjust to taste.

  2. 8

Serve immediately. Enjoy black for 0 calories (without optional add-ons).
