Chocolate Milk

Method

Chocolate Milk

  1. 1

    Make chocolate paste

In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine the unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar. Add the hot water (about 1 tablespoon) and stir until you have a smooth, slightly thick chocolate paste with no lumps.

  2. 2

    Combine with milk

Pour 1 cup of cold whole milk into a tall glass or mixing container. Add the smooth chocolate paste to the milk.

  3. 3

    Flavor and season

Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a small pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon) of salt to the milk and chocolate mixture. The salt brightens the chocolate flavor.

  4. 4

    Mix until combined

Whisk vigorously with a fork, small whisk, or frother for 30–45 seconds until the cocoa is fully incorporated and the mixture is uniformly chocolatey. Alternatively, place everything in a covered jar and shake vigorously for 20–30 seconds.

  5. 5

    Serve

If serving cold, add ice (about 4 ice cubes) to a glass and pour the chocolate milk over the ice. Serve immediately. If you prefer it slightly warmed, gently heat the combined milk and chocolate paste in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until warm (do not boil), then serve.
