Method
Juice
- 1
Measure and chill
Chill a 16 oz (about 475 ml) serving glass in the refrigerator or fill it with ice water for 3–5 minutes, then discard the ice water. This keeps the juice cold longer without diluting it immediately.
- 2
Prepare fresh orange juice (if not using pre-bottled)
If using whole oranges, wash 3–4 medium naval or Valencia oranges. Cut each orange in half crosswise. Using a handheld or electric citrus juicer, juice the oranges until you have 16 oz (about 475 ml) of juice. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a measuring cup if you prefer pulp-free juice. Save any pulp for another use if desired.
- 3
Adjust sweetness (optional)
Taste the juice. If you prefer it slightly sweeter, stir in 1 teaspoon of simple syrup or honey until dissolved. If the flavor seems flat, add a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of salt to brighten the citrus notes and stir well.
- 4
Assemble
Add 3–4 ice cubes to the chilled serving glass. Pour 16 oz of orange juice over the ice, leaving about 1/2 inch at the top to avoid spillage.
