Sushi Rice

Sushi Fillings

Nori and Condiments

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the sushi rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear, about 2-3 minutes.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and water is absorbed.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

Once cooked, remove from heat and let it sit covered for 10 minutes. In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Fold this mixture into the warm rice gently using a spatula.

Prepare Fillings

  1. 4

    Slice the Vegetables

Cut the cucumber and avocado into thin strips for easy rolling.

  2. 5

    Prepare Seafood

If using fresh salmon, slice it into thin strips. If using crab meat, shred it into bite-sized pieces.

  3. 6

    Cream Cheese Preparation

Cut the cream cheese into thin strips or small dollops for easy placement in the rolls.

Assemble Sushi Rolls

  1. 7

    Lay Out the Nori

Place a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat or a clean surface.

  2. 8

    Spread the Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking and take a handful of sushi rice. Spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch on the top edge.

  3. 9

    Add Fillings

Place a few strips of cucumber, avocado, crab, salmon, and cream cheese across the center of the rice.

  4. 10

    Roll the Sushi

Starting from the bottom, lift the bamboo mat and begin to roll it away from you, applying gentle pressure. Roll until the nori is sealed at the top edge.

  5. 11

    Slice the Rolls

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces, wiping the knife with a damp cloth between cuts to keep it clean.

Serve

  1. 12

    Arrange the Platter

Place the sushi pieces on a serving platter. You can garnish with additional slices of avocado or cucumber, if desired.

  2. 13

    Add Condiments

Serve with soy sauce and wasabi on the side for dipping.
