Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 1 oz Maker’s Mark, 1 oz Hendrick’s Gin, 0.5 oz fresh orange juice, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 3 dashes rhubarb bitters and 1 dash Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until well chilled (shake harder for a slightly more diluted, colder drink).

  4. 4

    Prepare glass and garnish

Discard ice water from the chilled glass (if used) and optionally add fresh ice if you prefer the drink on the rocks. Using a vegetable peeler or small knife, cut a wide strip of orange peel and express the oils over the glass by holding it skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the drink and giving it a firm twist.

  5. 5

    Strain and serve

Double-strain the contents of the shaker into the chilled coupe (or over fresh ice in a rocks glass) using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove small ice shards and pulp.

  6. 6

    Finish

Garnish with one maraschino cherry (preferably Luxardo) either skewered or dropped into the drink, and rest the expressed orange peel on the rim or float it on the surface. Serve immediately.
