Preparation

Preparing the Dough

1. Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (1.5 cups) and sugar (1 tbsp). Sprinkle the yeast (1 tbsp) over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

2. Mix Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour (4 cups) and salt (1 tsp). Once the yeast is activated, pour it into the flour mixture along with olive oil (2 tbsp). Stir until a dough forms.

3. Knead Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 7-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Form it into a ball.

4. First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Shaping and Baking

5. Prepare Baking Soda Solution

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add baking soda (2 tbsp) and stir until dissolved.

6. Shape Pretzel Poles

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long thin pole (about 12 inches).

7. Boil Pretzel Poles

Gently drop each pretzel pole into the boiling baking soda solution for about 30 seconds, then remove them using a slotted spoon.

8. Add Toppings

Place the boiled pretzel poles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt (1 tbsp), garlic powder (1 tsp), and onion powder (1 tsp).

9. Bake

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the pretzel poles for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

10. Cool and Serve

Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
