Method

For the Chicken

  1. 1

    Marinate the Chicken

In a large bowl, pour the buttermilk over the chicken pieces. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for the best flavor.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Coating

In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large deep skillet or fryer, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

    Fry the Chicken

Remove the chicken from the buttermilk and dredge each piece in the flour mixture, shaking off excess. Carefully place the chicken in the hot oil and fry for about 10-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Drain on paper towels.

For the Waffles

  1. 5

    Preheat the Waffle Iron

Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. 6

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

  3. 7

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.

  4. 8

    Combine Mixtures

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

  5. 9

    Cook the Waffles

Pour an appropriate amount of batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions until golden brown.

For Serving

  1. 10

    Serve

Place a waffle on a plate, top with a piece of fried chicken, and drizzle with maple syrup. Add a pat of butter on top of the chicken if desired.
