Method
Preparation
- 1
Slice the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings, approximately 1/2 inch wide. Separate the rings and set them aside.
Batter Mixing
- 2
Prepare the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well mixed.
- 3
Add Water
Gradually add water to the dry ingredients, whisking continuously until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings.
Frying
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter; if it sizzles and rises to the surface, it's ready.
- 5
Coat the Onion Rings
Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off.
- 6
- 7
Drain and Serve
Once cooked, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
