Hush Puppies Ingredients

Method

Hush Puppies Directions

1

Prepare the batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

2

Add wet ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and beaten egg. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the chopped onion.

3

Heat the oil

In a deep skillet or fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 365°F (185°C).

4

Fry the hush puppies

Using a spoon or small scoop, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, flipping halfway through.

5

Drain and serve

Remove the hush puppies from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve warm.
