Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Churn the Cream

Pour the heavy cream into a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl. Using a whisk attachment or a hand mixer, start beating the cream on medium speed until it thickens and eventually separates into butter and buttermilk. This may take about 10-15 minutes.

  2. 2

    Strain and Rinse

Once the butter has formed, strain it through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to separate the buttermilk. Rinse the butter under cold running water to remove any remaining buttermilk, which helps prolong its shelf life.

  3. 3

    Add Salt

If desired, mix in salt to taste. Start with 1 teaspoon and adjust according to your preference.

  4. 4

    Shape and Store

Transfer the butter to a container or shape it into a log using parchment paper. Refrigerate or freeze for longer storage.
