Prepare the Ingredients
Thinly slice the roast beef and onion. Grate the Swiss cheese if not pre-grated.

Toast the Bread
While the onions are cooking, toast the slices of French bread until golden brown.

Assemble the Sandwich
Spread mayonnaise on one side of each toasted bread slice. Layer the roast beef on one slice, followed by the sautéed onions and Swiss cheese. Top with the other slice of bread.

Melt the Cheese
Place the assembled sandwich back in the skillet over medium heat. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down lightly, until the cheese is melted and the bread is crispy.

Serve
Remove the sandwich from the skillet, cut in half if desired, and serve hot.
