Hot Dogs & Buns

For Boiling (if boiling method used)

Method

Prepare Toppings

1

Ready toppings

Arrange yellow mustard, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, diced onion, dill pickle spears, and sport peppers in small bowls so guests can assemble to taste. If using shredded cheese, sauerkraut, or jalapeños, place them in separate bowls as well.

Cook Hot Dogs

2

Boiling method (tender, even cook)

Fill a medium pot with 2 liters of water and 1 tsp salt. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-high heat. Add hot dogs and reduce heat to maintain a low simmer. Cook 5–7 minutes until heated through. Use tongs to remove and drain.

3

Pan-sear / Skillet (crispy exterior)

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add a teaspoon of oil or a little butter if desired. Place hot dogs in the skillet and cook, turning every 1–2 minutes, until nicely browned and blistered in spots, about 6–8 minutes total.

4

Grill (charred flavor)

Preheat grill to medium-high. Place hot dogs directly over the heat and grill 5–7 minutes, turning every 1–2 minutes, until marks appear and sausages are heated through. For extra flavor, score shallow diagonal slits in each hot dog before grilling.

5

Toast buns

While hot dogs finish cooking, spread softened butter evenly on the inside of each bun. Toast buns in a dry skillet or on the grill for 1–2 minutes per side until golden and lightly crisp, or place them face-down on the griddle briefly.

Assemble

6

Place a cooked hot dog into each toasted bun. Offer condiments and toppings so each person can customize. Classic assembly: a squiggle of yellow mustard, a spoon of ketchup if desired, a small spoon of relish, and a sprinkle of diced onion. Add pickle spear or sport pepper on the side or tucked into the bun.

7

Optional add-ons: top with shredded cheddar for a cheesy dog, spoon warmed sauerkraut over the sausage for a tangy option, or add jalapeño slices for heat.

Serve

8

Serve hot immediately with chips, fries, or onion rings. Keep extra condiments available for passing. Leftover cooked hot dogs can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
