Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the drink to chill it.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice, add 2 oz Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz orange curaçao (or triple sec), and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full spoon rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted (the mixing glass will frost). Stirring keeps the drink clear and silky.

  4. 4

    Prepare serving glass

If you chilled the glass in the freezer, remove it. If you used ice water to chill, dump the ice water and add 1 large ice cube (or 2–3 large ice pieces) to the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube(s).

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist. Rub the peel around the rim, then drop it into the glass as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the whiskey-forward balance of Jack Daniel's with the sweet vermouth and orange notes.
