Ingredients

Cocktail

Garnish & Finish

Optional: Ginger Syrup (if not using liqueur)

Preparation

Optional: Make Ginger Syrup

1. Simmer syrup

Combine sliced fresh ginger, 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup granulated sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stir until sugar dissolves, then reduce heat and simmer 5–7 minutes to infuse. Remove from heat and let steep 20–30 minutes for stronger flavor. Strain out ginger and cool. Yields roughly 6–8 tbsp; use 1/2 oz per cocktail. Store refrigerated up to 2 weeks.

Cocktail Preparation

2. Chill glass

If desired, place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

3. Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz whiskey, 1/2 oz pure maple syrup, 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice, 1/2 oz ginger liqueur (or 1/2 oz cooled ginger syrup), and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

4. Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice, cap, and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the shaker feels cold to the touch and the mixture is well-chilled and slightly diluted.

5. Prepare glass

Discard ice or water from the chilled old-fashioned glass. Place a single large ice cube (or 2–3 regular ice cubes) in the glass.

6. Strain

Double-strain the cocktail from the shaker into the prepared glass over the large ice cube to remove any tiny ice shards and bits of pulp.

7. Garnish & aroma

Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a firm squeeze to release the oils, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it in. If using, lightly grasp the rosemary sprig and flame it quickly with a lighter or kitchen torch for 1–2 seconds (optional) to release smoky aroma — wave it over the drink and optionally rest the sprig on the rim.

8. Serve

Present immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the interplay of warm whiskey, bright lemon, rich maple, and ginger spice.
