Muddle fruit and mint
In a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, add the 8 fresh blackberries, 10 fresh mint leaves, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.75 oz simple syrup. Gently muddle the blackberries and mint with a muddler or back of a spoon until the blackberries release juice and the mint is fragrant. Avoid over-muddling the mint to prevent bitterness.
- 3
Add rum and ice
Add 2 oz white rum to the muddled mixture. Fill the shaker with a small handful of ice (not crushed) and give it a short, vigorous shake—about 6–8 seconds—to chill and lightly dilute the mix.
- 4
Strain and assemble
Discard the chilling ice from your glass if you left any. Using a fine mesh strainer (or a Hawthorne strainer plus the shaker strainer), double-strain the shaken mixture into the prepared glass filled with fresh crushed ice. Double-straining removes seeds and larger bits of mint/blackberry for a smoother drink.
- 5
Top and finish
Top the drink with about 2 oz club soda, gently stir once or twice with a bar spoon to integrate without flattening the soda. Taste and adjust sweetness with up to 0.25 oz more simple syrup if desired.
- 6
Garnish
Garnish with 2 whole blackberries, a sprig of fresh mint, and a lime wheel or wedge placed on the rim. Clap the mint sprig between your hands once before garnishing to release aroma, if desired.
- 7
Serve
Serve immediately with a straw. Encourage the drinker to gently stir as they sip to re-distribute fruit and mint.
