Pretzels

Housemade Bread

Method

Pretzels

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine warm water, brown sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix in Ingredients

Add salt and all-purpose flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape the Pretzels

Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C). Punch down the risen dough, and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.

  6. 6

    Prepare Baking Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and dissolve the baking soda in it.

  7. 7

    Boil the Pretzels

Boil each pretzel in the baking soda bath for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  8. 8

    Egg Wash and Salt

Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle coarse sea salt on top.

  9. 9

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Housemade Bread

  1. 10

    Prepare the Yeast

In a bowl, combine warm water and honey. Stir in the active dry yeast and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 11

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour and salt.

  3. 12

    Combine Mixtures

Once the yeast is ready, add it to the dry ingredients along with the olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 13

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 14

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

  6. 15

    Shape the Bread

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the risen dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it into a greased loaf pan.

  7. 16

    Final Rise

Cover the loaf and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes until it rises above the edge of the pan.

  8. 17

    Bake the Bread

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the bread has a golden crust and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  9. 18

    Cool and Serve

Remove the bread from the oven, let it cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
