Preparation

1

Muddle the Sugar

In an Old Fashioned glass, place the sugar cube and add the dashes of Angostura bitters. Muddle them together with a muddler or the back of a spoon until the sugar is mostly dissolved.

2

Add Whiskey

Pour the bourbon or rye whiskey over the muddled sugar and bitters mixture.

3

Add Ice

Add the ice cubes to the glass. You can use one large ice cube for slower dilution or several smaller cubes.

4

Stir

Gently stir the mixture with a bar spoon or a regular spoon until well combined and chilled.

5

Garnish

Twist the orange peel over the drink to release its oils, then place it in the glass. Add the maraschino cherry as a garnish on top.
