Crispy Calamari
Method
Preparation and Cooking
- 1
Prepare the Ingredients
Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This helps remove excess moisture and ensures crispiness.
- 2
Make the Coating
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to ensure even distribution of the spices.
- 3
Soak the Calamari
Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip the calamari rings into the buttermilk, ensuring they are fully coated. Let them soak for about 10 minutes to tenderize the calamari.
- 4
Coat the Calamari
After soaking, remove the calamari rings from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Dredge the rings in the flour mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- 5
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.
- 6
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in small batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels.
- 7
Serve
Serve the crispy calamari hot with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
