1. Combine Milk and Cream
In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium heat until the mixture is hot but not boiling, stirring occasionally.
2. Add Sugar and Salt
Once the milk and cream are hot, add the granulated sugar and a pinch of salt. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
3. Add Vanilla Extract
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.

7. Cook the Mixture
Return the saucepan to medium-low heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 8-10 minutes.

Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl to remove any cooked egg bits.
9. Cool and Chill
Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to chill completely.
