Method
Mussels Preparation
- 1
Clean the Mussels
Rinse the mussels under cold running water to remove any sand or debris. Scrub the shells with a brush if needed. Discard any mussels that are open and do not close when tapped.
- 2
Cook the Mussels
In a large pot, add the cleaned mussels and cover them with a lid. Steam over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, or until all mussels have opened. Remove from heat and set aside.
Marinara Sauce Preparation
- 3
Sauté Garlic
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes, until fragrant but not browned.
- 4
Add Tomatoes and Spices
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 5
Finish the Sauce
Add the chopped fresh basil to the sauce, stir well, and let it simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Combining Mussels and Sauce
- 6
Combine and Serve
Once the mussels are cooked and the sauce is ready, add the mussels to the skillet with the marinara sauce. Gently stir to coat the mussels with the sauce. Serve immediately.
