Method
Meatballs
- 1
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 2
Mix Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- 3
Form Meatballs
Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 4
Bake Meatballs
Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until cooked through and browned.
Sauce
- 5
Sauté Onions and Garlic
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then add minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.
- 6
Add Tomatoes and Spices
Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
- 7
Simmer Sauce
Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
Sandwich Assembly
- 8
Combine Meatballs and Sauce
Once the meatballs are done, add them to the simmering sauce and stir to coat.
- 9
Prepare Sub Rolls
Slice the sub rolls lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Place them on a baking sheet.
- 10
Assemble Sandwiches
Spoon meatballs and sauce into each sub roll. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- 11
Melt Cheese
Place the assembled sandwiches under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- 12
Garnish and Serve
Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and serve immediately.
