Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Grate Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes and use a box grater or food processor to shred them into thin strips. You should have about 4 cups of grated potatoes.

  2. 2

    Rinse and Drain

Place the grated potatoes in a bowl of cold water and rinse them thoroughly to remove excess starch. Drain them well in a colander and let them sit for about 10 minutes to remove additional moisture.

  3. 3

    Season Potatoes

Transfer the drained potatoes back into a bowl. Add salt, ground black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well until the potatoes are evenly coated with the seasonings.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Heat Oil and Butter

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil and butter over medium-high heat until the oil is shimmering and the butter is melted.

  2. 5

    Cook Hash Browns

Add the seasoned grated potatoes to the skillet in an even layer. Press them down gently with a spatula to form a compact layer. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.

  3. 6

    Flip and Finish Cooking

Using a large plate, carefully flip the hash brown over and return it to the skillet. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the other side is also golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Serve

Once cooked, remove the hash browns from the skillet and drain excess oil on paper towels. Cut into wedges or squares and serve hot.
