Method

Prep Work

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Prepare Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

Mixing Ingredients

  1. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  2. 4

    Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  3. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Slowly stir in the boiling water to the batter. The batter will be thin, which is normal.

Baking

  1. 6

    Pour Batter into Pans

Evenly distribute the batter into the prepared cake pans.

  2. 7

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  3. 8

    Cool the Cakes

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  1. 9

    Make the Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with milk, and beat until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.

  2. 10

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides.
