Method

Country Fried Steak

  1. 1

    Prepare the Breading

In a shallow bowl, whisk together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of black pepper, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of onion powder.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Egg Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together 1 large egg and 1 cup of milk until well combined.

  3. 3

    Bread the Steaks

Dip each beef cube steak first into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally back into the flour mixture, pressing to adhere.

  4. 4

    Fry the Steaks

In a large skillet, heat 2 cups of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the breaded steaks and fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Gravy

  1. 5

    Make the Gravy

In the same skillet used to fry the steaks (with the remaining oil), lower the heat to medium. Add 1 cup of all-purpose flour to the pan drippings and whisk to combine. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until the flour is golden.

  2. 6

    Add Milk and Season

Slowly whisk in 2 cups of milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Season with 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of black pepper. Cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

Eggs

  1. 7

    Cook the Eggs

In a separate skillet, melt 2 tbs of butter over medium heat. Crack 4 large eggs into the skillet and cook to your desired doneness (sunny-side up, over-easy, etc.).

Potato Side

  1. 8

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel and dice 4 medium potatoes. Place them in a pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook for about 15-20 minutes until tender.

  2. 9

    Finish the Potatoes

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add 2 tbs of butter and 1 tsp of salt. Mash or leave them cubed, depending on your preference.
