Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the basmati rice in a large bowl and rinse it under cold water. Gently stir the rice with your hand to remove excess starch. Rinse until the water runs clear, then drain the rice in a fine-mesh sieve.

  2. 2

    Soak the Rice (optional)

For best results, soak the rinsed rice in cold water for about 30 minutes. This helps the grains cook evenly and achieve a fluffy texture.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, combine the soaked (or unsoaked) basmati rice, water, salt, and optional ghee or oil. Add the whole spices (cardamom, cinnamon, and bay leaf) if desired.

  2. 4

    Bring to a Boil

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Stir gently to prevent the rice from sticking.

  3. 5

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice has absorbed all the water and is tender.

  4. 6

    Fluff the Rice

Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. Then, remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the rice gently.

  5. 7

    Serve

Serve the basmati rice warm as a side dish or as a base for your favorite curry or stir-fry.
