Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook Rigatoni

In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the rigatoni pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Gravy Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Gravy

In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  2. 3

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir to combine.

  3. 4

    Season the Sauce

Add dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and let cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Meatball and Sausage Preparation

  1. 5

    Prepare Meatballs

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, and the egg. Mix until well combined.

  2. 6

    Form Meatballs

Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.

  3. 7

    Cook Meatballs

In a large skillet, heat a bit of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove and set aside.

  4. 8

    Cook Sausage

In the same skillet, add the Italian sausage links and cook until browned and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Remove and slice into pieces.

Combine and Serve

  1. 9

    Combine Ingredients

Once the gravy is done simmering, add the cooked meatballs and sliced sausage to the sauce. Let simmer for an additional 10 minutes.

  2. 10

    Serve the Dish

Toss the rigatoni with the gravy mixture. Serve hot, topped with additional grated Parmesan cheese and fresh chopped basil.
