Pasta

Toppings (optional)

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside. Do not rinse.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 4

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly, forming a roux.

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook for a few minutes until the sauce thickens.

  4. 6

    Add Cheeses

Reduce heat to low, then add the shredded cheddar cheese and softened cream cheese. Stir until fully melted and smooth.

  5. 7

    Season the Sauce

Stir in the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder. Mix well to combine.

Combine and Serve

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni into the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is fully coated.

  2. 9

    Optional Toppings

If desired, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac 'n cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle with breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese.

  3. 10

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top.
