For the Patty Melt

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onion

Slice the large onion into thin rings. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Cook the Onion

In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once done, remove from the skillet and set aside.

  3. 3

    Make the Beef Patty

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place 2 slices of Swiss cheese on top of each patty to melt.

  2. 5

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Once the patties are done, remove them from the skillet. On the unbuttered side of two slices of rye bread, place one patty with melted cheese and some of the caramelized onions. Top with another slice of rye bread, buttered side out.

  3. 6

    Grill the Sandwich

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the assembled patty melt to the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Repeat for the second patty melt.
