Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Brown the Butter

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the butter foams and turns a golden brown color, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  2. 2

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine the browned butter and granulated sugar. Whisk together until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  3. 3

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In another bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cake

Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.

Strawberry Topping Preparation

  1. 7

    Prepare the Strawberries

While the cake is cooling, hull and slice the fresh strawberries. Place them in a bowl.

  2. 8

    Make the Strawberry Mixture

Sprinkle the granulated sugar and lemon juice over the sliced strawberries. Toss gently to coat and let sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow the juices to release.

Assembly

  1. 9

    Serve the Cake

Once the cake is completely cooled, place it on a serving plate. Top with the macerated strawberries and their juices. Slice and serve.
