Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until evenly mixed.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  3. 3

    Form the Dough

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the wet mixture into the well. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not sticky.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1-2 minutes until smooth and elastic. Do not over-knead.

Frying Process

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it; if it sizzles and bubbles, the oil is ready.

  2. 6

    Shape the Dough

Pinch off small pieces of dough (about the size of a golf ball) and flatten them slightly with your hands.

  3. 7

    Fry the Dough

Carefully place the shaped dough into the hot oil. Fry in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

  4. 8

    Drain and Dust

Remove the fried dough from the oil using a slotted spoon and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil. While still warm, dust the fried dough with powdered sugar.
