Donut Batter

Method

Making the Donut Batter

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground nutmeg until well combined.

  2. 2

    Mix the Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat the eggs and then add the buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold until just combined. Do not overmix; the batter should be slightly lumpy.

  4. 4

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a donut pan with cooking spray.

  5. 5

    Fill the Donut Pan

Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.

  6. 6

    Bake the Donuts

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the donuts are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Donuts

Remove the donuts from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Glaze

  1. 8

    Prepare the Glaze

In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and food coloring (if using) until smooth and glossy.

  2. 9

    Glaze the Donuts

Once the donuts have cooled, dip the tops of each donut into the glaze and let excess drip off. Place them back on the wire rack to allow the glaze to set.

  3. 10

    Serve

Once the glaze has set, serve the donuts immediately or store them in an airtight container at room temperature.
