Preparation

1

Prepare the Yams

Peel the yams and cut them into 1-inch thick slices. You should have about 4 cups of sliced yams.

Cooking

2

Boil the Yams

In a large pot, bring enough water to a boil to cover the yams. Add the sliced yams and boil for about 10 minutes until they are just tender. Drain and set aside.

3

Make the Syrup

In a large saucepan, combine the brown sugar, maple syrup, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Add the 0.5 cups of water and stir well. Heat over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is bubbly.

4

Combine Yams and Syrup

Add the cooked yams to the saucepan with the syrup. Gently stir to coat the yams evenly with the syrup.

5

Add Butter

Cut the butter into small pieces and scatter them over the yams in the saucepan. Allow the butter to melt into the mixture.

6

Bake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the yam and syrup mixture into a baking dish and bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the yams are caramelized and tender.

7

Optional Marshmallows

If using, add the mini marshmallows on top of the yams during the last 10 minutes of baking. Allow them to melt and brown slightly.
