Method

Biscuits + Gravy

  1. 1

    Make the Biscuits

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the buttermilk until just combined. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently. Pat to about 1-inch thickness. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Gravy

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked. Remove the sausage, leaving the drippings in the pan. Sprinkle flour over the drippings and stir for about 2 minutes until it’s lightly browned. Gradually whisk in the milk, making sure no lumps form. Cook until thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.

  3. 3

    Serve

Split the warm biscuits in half, ladle the sausage gravy generously over the biscuits, and serve immediately.
