Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  2. 2

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, reserve about 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti in a colander. Set aside.

Tomato Sauce Preparation

  1. 3

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the crushed canned tomatoes and stir to combine. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

  3. 5

    Season the Sauce

Add the sugar, salt, black pepper, and basil. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce becomes too thick, add some reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.

  4. 6

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Once the sauce has thickened and flavors have melded, add the drained spaghetti to the skillet. Toss well to coat the spaghetti with the sauce.

  5. 7

    Serve

Serve the spaghetti hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese.
