    Prepare the Patties

    In a bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, then form into two equal patties.

    Cook the Patties

    Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

    Add Cheese

    During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on each patty and cover to melt.

    Prepare the Vegetables

    While the patties are cooking, slice the tomato and onion. Rinse the lettuce and set aside.

    Toast the burger buns if desired. Place a patty on each bun, then top with lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, and mustard. Close the bun and serve.
