Preparation and Cooking Instructions
Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
Add Shortening
Cut in the shortening or lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add Water
Gradually add warm water, mixing until the dough comes together. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
Rest the Dough
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
Roll Out the Dough
On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles.
Heat Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat oil to 375°F (190°C).
Fry the Sopapillas
Fry the dough pieces in the hot oil until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Drain and Serve
Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with honey drizzled on top.
